Steps

1. Categories. A product's category is its dosage form — Tablet, Capsule, Syrup, Injection, Ointment, Drops, Inhaler, Surgical. You pick it on the product form, and you can also use it on the Products screen to narrow the list.

   

   1 is the Categories button, 2 searches the list, 3 is the list itself with the current choice ticked, 4 is Add custom entry… — type a category of your own and press + to create it — and 5 is Select. 6 is what you get back: a Tablet ✕ chip beside the button, and the counts above the table drop to match (31 products here, not the full catalog). Click the ✕ to clear it.

2. Units & pack. On the product form, Primary Unit is what the product sells as (Strip, Bottle, Tube…), Per Pack is how many dispensable units are in one, and Smallest Unit is what one of those is called — Strip / 10 / Tablet for a typical strip medicine (→ PROD-01).

   

   At the counter, 1 is the Qty for the line, 2 is the MRP — the price of one whole pack — and 3 is the line Amount. Qty counts in packs, so 1 here is one strip at ₹42.00.

3. Selling loose units. Turn on Allow Loose Sales in Settings → Inventory (→ SET-12). For a product with more than one unit per pack, type the quantity as strips.pills — the digits after the decimal point are a literal count of loose units, not a fraction.

   • On a strip of 10, 0.04 is four loose tablets and 2.03 is two strips plus three.
   • The − and + buttons move one loose unit at a time, not one strip.
   • Once the loose count reaches a full pack it rolls up by itself — on a strip of 15, entering 1.16 (31 tablets) comes back as 2.01.

   Per Pack 1 makes a product non-breakable: quantities stay whole numbers and no conversion happens. Turn Allow Loose Sales off to sell only whole packs for breakable products at this store.

⚠ Careful

• Changing pack/unit configuration after stock exists can distort counts — set it right when the product is created; if you must change it, do a stock audit right after (→ INV-04).
• Bills already saved are safe. Each bill line records the pack size as it was at the time of sale, so editing Per Pack later never rewrites what an old bill meant. The risk is to stock on hand, not to history.
